Update on the Winter Sowing Project

Winter Bee Garden

Way back in January, I started some seeds in a winter sowing with milk jugs project. [You can read about it here.] I planted 13 jugs altogether.

Here it, the first of April, and I’m underwhelmed with the process.

Nothing sprouted in 5 of the jugs: lisianthus was a no-go for the second year in a row, and strawflowers and snapdragons were a bust.

Into the trash.

Limited success with several jugs: scabiosa has 6 seedlings, larkspur and prairie sun with only a handful of seedlings.

Definitely did much better with the prairie sun and larkspur with indoor sowing. This despite the planting mishap with the larkspur a few weeks ago. I’ve already planted the prairie sun outside and the larkspur will be in the raised beds this week.

Feverfew is the front-runner for jug sowing, dara and poppies did okay.

I’m anxiously awaiting to see how the bupleurum makes out. I haven’t started any inside- the seeds need to sit in the freezer two weeks before sowing.

Aren’t these pretty seedlings? They look like tiny birds flying.

This is what is still in jugs.

I’ll let you know in the upcoming weeks how these seedlings transplant into the garden beds, and how they compare to seedlings grown under lights.

At this point, I’m unlikely to try winter sowing in the future. But maybe these seedlings will surprise me with rigorous growth once they’re in the ground.

I’m hoping frosty temps are behind us now. Can’t wait to get more plants outside! Do you have any plants in your garden yet? Pam 🌷
